Squeak Remover v1.0
Removes the squeaking and high-pitched jingling sounds from Clive and Jill’s armors.
“Is anyone else getting an odd squeaky noise every time Clive is running around? It’s almost like it’s intentional when the armor is moving.”
“I just got jill and while running around I get this unbearable high pitched electric/metal sound. Really killing the game for me rn”
“makes travel with Jill unbearable. When does she get Sephiroth-ed?”
“this bitch squeakin like spunchbob squarepants!”
Yes, these are REAL posts, from real, live people online. Has this ever happened to you? You’re enjoying your new game, losing yourself in the world of Final Fantasy for the 16th time — only for your camera to draw a little too close to your new friend Jill. The dulcet tones of jingling keys and pockets full of coins fill your ears, and you grow cognizant of the subtle, almost tasteful squeak of leather from Clive’s shoes, and you smile as you appreciate the fine details that went into the game’s audio design.
And then, 20 hours later, you realize it doesn’t stop. It never stops. And try as you might, you just can’t unhear it.
This mod (hopefully) replaces Clive’s squeakier footstep sound effects with copies of less squeaky alternatives, prioritizing matching the same lengths and sounds as best I could, and mutes the ‘jingling coins’ sound of Jill’s armor. Because while I like the squeak of tight leather pants as much as the next person, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.
Because it replaces them with copies of other, less offensive sound files, there is technically a decrease in total sound variety as a result — but to put it into perspective, there are hundreds of sound effects for the armor alone while moving, with several hundred more separate footstep sounds left untouched, and about 20 total armor sounds were replaced. In practice, I personally find that any hypothetical repetition is completely unnoticeable.
INSTALLATION:
– Install Reloaded-II Mod Manager and FFXVI Mod Loader, if you haven’t already
– Drag the zip folder into your FFXVI Reloaded-II menu (if dragging and dropping doesn’t work, you may need to restart the mod manager)
– Enable the mod, and click ‘launch application’
FAQ:
“I still heard a squeak. Who am I suing?”
Because none of the sound effects are labeled, I prioritized removing the most egregious squeaks to avoid accidentally swapping out anything important. There may be occasional sounds with very quiet squeaks, or squeaks that are muffled enough by other sounds that I gave them a pass. I would still say with relative confidence that there is up to a 90% reduction in total squeaking. The jingling should see a 100% reduction, however, which is pretty impressive in today’s economy.
“Does this work with another mod?”
Maybe! To be honest, I’m not even sure if this mod works with itself, so just think of it a potential moment for all of us to grow and change.
“Does it work on any other characters?”
Are there any other characters? I’m not finished yet, but if any others get on my nerves enough I may update this later.
“I hate the jingling, but I like Clive’s squeaky pants (or vice versa). Can I just add one?”
I have no idea, but Clive and Jill’s sound effects are in separate files in the mod folder so you could probably delete one or the other. You may also need to remove the 0016.diff.pac file (NOT the regular 0016.pac) in your FINAL FANTASY XVI\data folder if you’ve already launched the game with it, to let it recreate it. If it doesn’t work, yell at me and I’ll make split versions.
“You did this wrong! You were supposed to do this instead. Die!”
This isn’t a question, but you’re probably right! Be sure to let me know in the comments, and I’ll do my best to fix it if I can.
