Final Fantasy 16: Dog can do sick flips
Square Enix, the developer behind Final Fantasy 16, has recently revealed combat featuring its canine companion, exceeding all expectations.
On March 21, the Japan-based Final Fantasy 16 Twitter account shared a brief snippet of new gameplay, which can be seen below. The standout moment from this clip is witnessing Torgal, the dog/wolf, in action for the first time, teaming up with protagonist Clive to execute a powerful aerial attack on a scorpion-like creature.

Although it was announced in late 2021 that players would be able to fight alongside Torgal in Final Fantasy 16, this is the debut of the feature in action. Torgal flips the enemy into the air, spinning it momentarily before Clive swoops in to deliver the impressive finishing move, sending the monster crashing back to the ground.
This particular move is reminiscent of Devil May Cry 5’s combat, where Nero could launch an enemy skyward and perform a chained combo in mid-air. This similarity is not surprising, as Final Fantasy 16’s combat is led by Devil May Cry 5’s Ryota Suzuki. It’s exciting to see aspects of the latter’s combat influencing the new Square Enix game.
In Final Fantasy 16, it appears that the core combat moves will be divided between Clive and Torgal, rather than being performed by a single character. To learn more about Suzuki’s approach to revamping the combat for a modern audience, check out our comprehensive Final Fantasy 16 combat interview.
Fans can look forward to the release of Final Fantasy 16 on June 22, exclusively for PS5, with just a few more months to go.
As they say, the proof is in the pudding. If FF16 is great, word will get around fast.
