Final Fantasy 16: Second playable character aside from Clive
Final Fantasy 16 Introduces a Second Playable Character with a Minor Role.
In a recent interview with Japanese publication Game Watch (opens in new tab), Final Fantasy 16’s creative director, Kazutoyo Maehiro, shared new details about the game. Maehiro revealed that, aside from the protagonist Clive, there would be another playable character at the beginning of the game. However, this character is not expected to have a significant role (translation by GamesRadar+).
Maehiro’s statement suggests that the second playable character’s importance in Final Fantasy 16 might be limited, as they will likely only be playable for a brief period and not have a major role alongside Clive throughout the game.
Before Maehiro’s revelation, producer Naoki Yoshida mentioned that AI-controlled party members would join Clive in battles in Final Fantasy 16. As a result, players should not anticipate controlling the second character during fights with the protagonist.
The presence of AI-driven party members in Final Fantasy 16 has been known for some time. Square Enix has consistently stated that Clive will be the sole playable character in combat, supported by his AI allies during battles in the new RPG.
In other news from recent Japanese interviews, the developers disclosed that Final Fantasy 16 is approximately 95% complete, and a demo is in development. The release date for the demo remains uncertain, but Yoshida previously hinted that it could potentially launch in 2023.
